While formally, family law across Ontario is the same, there are significant practical differences for women living in rural and remote communities. We have a section on this website dedicated to managing these differences.
For example, it can be hard to keep anything private in a small community where people tend to know each other’s business. This can make it difficult for a woman to reach out for help without her partner or their family finding out. The only lawyer in the community could be a family member. Or her partner could have met with the lawyer first, meaning she can not use them for legal services. The distance to accessing services, or lack of access to internet or cell phone service also pose a barrier for women.
