Free summary legal advice for your family law issue

The Luke’s Place Legal Clinic connects women anywhere in Ontario to family law lawyers for free summary legal advice.

What’s summary legal advice?

Summary legal advice means that the lawyer:

  • Will explain how the law will apply based on the facts of your situation
  • Will suggest steps you can take for your case, such as what you should ask for from the court and what evidence you will need
  • Can assist you to complete court forms and documents
  • CANNOT provide legal representation, which is when the lawyer speaks for you in court and to your ex-partner or your ex-partner’s lawyer.

Who can use the Clinic?

You can use our Legal Clinic if you are a woman in Ontario who:

  • Has experienced any form of abuse in your relationship
  • Has a family law legal issue for which you wish to receive summary legal advice (e.g. parenting arrangements, financial arrangements, safety concerns)
  • Does not have a lawyer for the legal issue(s) you wish to discuss

How does the Clinic work?

One of our lawyers will meet with you by video conference.

When you make an appointment with us, we will explain how to prepare.

If you live outside of Durham Region and do not currently have a support worker in your community, a Luke’s Place Legal Support Worker will help you access the video conference and prepare to meet with the lawyer.

Our Legal Support Worker will also connect you with services in your community for ongoing support.
